Distribution of .leon Virus

The .leon Virus is a new virus which has been sighted in attack campaign. At the moment the security researchers cannot determine the primary infection strategy. We presume that the most widely used tactics are going to be employed.

Among them are the email messages created in an automated way and sent to large lists of potential victims. The .leon Virus can be directly attached to the messages. This is one of the easiest way for the criminals to attempt the infection. However a lot of email hosting providers usually capture the signatures of the virus and as such discard such messages or label them as dangerous or spam. Other infection methods related to this one is the option of inserting hyperlinks in the body content of the messages. The links are usually labelled as leading to a familiar website or a file of user interest. Redirects can redirect to hacker-controlled sites, infected payloads or other instances that can lead to an .leon Virus infection.

The computer criminals behind the malware can create malicious sites or download portals which distribute malware of different kinds, including the .leon Virus. A popular option is the use of infected documents which may be of different types ‒ spreadsheets, rich text documents, presentations and databases. They are modified to initiate the virus once the built-in scripts are run. Usually when the files are opened a notification will ask the users to run the macros (scripts). If this is done the infection follows.

The hacker-controlled sites are specialist portals that have been created either manually or automatically by the criminals behind the .leon Virus. They can either directly distribute the threat by initiating various scripts or automated operations or link to such instances. Redirects are usually caused by email interaction, ad networks or other browsing activity. However one of the main sources is the availability of browser hijackers. They are malicious addons made for the most popular web browsers ‒ Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Edge and Safari. Once installed they not only infect the users with the malware, but also redirect the victims to a hacker-controlled site. Depending on the configuration the browser hijackers can also steal sensitive information such as any stored passwords, account credentials, history, bookmarks, form data and settings.

Impact of .leon Virus

The .leon virus is a malware strain that originates from the Blind ransomware family. This is one of the most recent malwaer families that have started to spawn customized strains. One of the first versions of it were detected back in September 2017. So far there have been two major iterations, the .leon virus seems to be based on the older code.

The early samples do not contain many advanced features however they were found to perform system alterations. They are generally related to stealth protection techniques that hide the malware code from discovery. This can be achieved by gathering information about the compromised hosts including the installed anti-virus software. This is used to bypass their detection engines. Advanced forms can be used to act against sandbox and debugging environments as well as virtual machine instances. In cases when this is not possible the .leon virus can automatically delete itself.

Further malware behavior includes the following processes:

  • Information Gathering — The .leon virus can be used to extract sensitive information from the victims. Usually it is categorized as either personally-identifiable data or anonymous metrics.
  • Malware Delivery — in certin situations the .leon virus can be used as a payload delivery mechanism to introduce other threats to the target computers.
  • Trojan Component — They are used to take over control of the victim computers. Advanced versions of this module can be used to record the mouse movement and kestrokes of the victims, as well as execute arbitrary code.
  • System Modification — The KNCTR virus is used to institute various changes to the computers such as Windows registry values, boot up modifications and etc. The victims can experience performance issues, application failure and the find that certain Windows services will fail.

Once all prerequisite conditions have been met the ransomware engine is started. It uses a built-in list of target file type extensions that constitute the most widely used data: backups, archives, images, music, videos, documents, databases and etc. A strong cipher is used to process them data which is then renamed with the .leon virus extension. The ransomware note is created in a How_Decrypt_Files.hta file which reads the following:
