How Does .Fmoon Virus Infiltrate the System?

The .Fmoon virus is distributed using the most popular ransomware spread tactics. As the malware is also known as the Moon Cryptor ransomware it can take different forms. The hackers behind it use several methods that have been noticed by the experts.

Email spam messages deliver the .Fmoon virus samples via campaigns coordinated by the hackers. Depending on the hackers they may be configured to spread the viruses under different forms:

  • Hyperlinks ‒ The email messages can contain links that lead to files containing the .Fmoon virus code.
  • Attachments ‒ The .Fmoon virus can be delivered to the messages as attachments.
  • Social Engineering Tricks ‒ The hackers behind the malware can utilize various tricks to try and make the victims infect themselves.

The hackers can also craft infected documents and software installers which are then uploaded to download sites and P2P networks such as BitTorrent. The documents contain scripts that lead to the .Fmoon virus infections. They are activated when the user opens the documents and agrees to run them via a prompt notification. Usually popular formats are hacked to include the threats. Examples include rich text documents, spreadsheets and databases.

The software installers themselves are modified instances of famous and legitimate programs that are widely used by computer users. Once the files are processed they are then distributed on hacker-controlled sites and popular P2P networks.

Web scripts and ad networks are another possible way of attaining the infection.

Infection Flow of .Fmoon Virus

The .Fmoon virus is a typical ransomware strain that is under investigation by the experts who discovered the samples. At the moment no resemblance with any of the known malware families has been established. This means that the hackers have probably made it from scratch or have used code snippets from other sources in a way that has not been detected yet.

It is also known as the MoonCryptor ransomware and it has been identified as a threat that spreads across the world. The .Fmoon virus follows the usual infection patterns that are associated with this type of threats. Upon infection it starts its encryption engine which targets sensitive system and user files. The data is encrypted with a strong cipher and renamed with the .fmoon virus. The malware uses a file list of target extensions that can be configured based on the intended targets. In most cases the criminals seek to process the most widely used files: documents, videos, photos, databases, music, configuration files, backups and etc.

When this process is complete a lockscreen is placed on the victim machine. It actively blocks any ordinary user interaction until the threat has been eliminated by a specialist anti-spyware utility.

It displays the ransomware note in application frame. The message reads the following:

MOON DECRYPTOR
WHAT HAPPENED ???

button [RECOYER]

The note is constructed based on a widely used template. It attempts to blackmail the victims into paying the criminals a fee to decrypt the compromised files. In addition it uses a time limit to further pressure the users.

We strongly recommend to disregard such scams and use a quality anti-spyware solution that can effectively remove all found active infections. Follow our removal instructions below to delete the .Fmoon virus. After this is done you can use the listed data recovery application to restore the affected data.
