Methods of RanRans Ransomware Ditribution

Only a single malicious file can trigger the RanRans ransomware infection. Its creators may be using spam email campaigns for RanRans payload distribution. Usually, they create crafted document or image files that are attached to the email. Actually, these files contain the malicious payload which infects the system with ransomware once they are opened on it. Beware of each received email as hackers may pose as employees of legal institutions like banks, internet providers, government departments, etc. aiming to trick users into interacting with the malicious content. RanRans ransomware payload may also be injected into the code of a webpage. The URL code of corrupted webpage may be distributed again via email or on social media channels. There are various attack vectors used by ransomware authors in order to take over a machine and encrypt files.

Impacts of RanRans Ransomware Infection

RanRans is designed to drop an executable file named Crack Me.exe to initiate the infection flow. Its code is based on the open-source code of Hidden Tear project, initially released for educational purposes. Many hackers misused of Hidden Tear’s initial goal and created malicious ransomware versions like EyLamo and Karmen that infected a large number of devices worldwide.

After RanRans virus drops and creates all files, it needs to complete its malicious actions which may be establishing a connection with server controlled by hackers, gathering and then sending system details to the server and modifying Windows registry the ransomware initiates a scan of all drives. The scan aims to find all target files like documents, photos, images, projects, PDFs, archives, text files, videos, music, databases and other so that it can utilize its built-in encryption module. The module is designed to modify the original code of each target file via the AES algorithm and append the malicious extension .ranrans at the end of each corrupted file. The .ranrans files become no longer accessible by any software except the decryptor.

The decryptor works only in case that the unique decryption key generated during the encoding process is applied to it. The key is possessed only by cyber criminals who disseminate the RanRans ransomware. They receive the key on their C&C server once it is generated by the threat. They demand a $50 ransom in BTC from victims for it.

Victims are instructed how to act further if they want to gain the decryption key via a ransom note file. It is called READ_IT.txt and is dropped on the infected PC by RanRans ransomware.

At this point, it seems that RanRans ransomware virus is in development. After analyzing its samples, researchers state that its code is full of errors and the threat crashes a lot. Thus, there is no guarantee that even the decryption key possessed by hackers will be a working one. Furthermore, it appears that none of the provided links in the ransom note is working and the decryptor is no longer able for a download. In any case, it is better to avoid the ransom payment because there is a risk to lose money and keep the .ranrans files locked.
