How Does Resurrection File Virus Infiltrate the System?

The research shows that the Resurrection virus is distributed in single binary executable files all appearing with a random name. This allows the criminals to use different strategies to distribute the threat.

A popular tactic for spreading Hidden Tear samples is the use of social engineering spam messages. The hackers send large-scale messages that imitate well-known companies or even government agencies. The Resurrection virus payload can either be attached or linked in the body of the messages.

The threat can also be contained in infected files. They can be either Office documents (databases, spreadsheets or rich text documents) containing malicious scripts. When they are opened a prompt appears that asks the users to enable them. If this is done the Resurrection virus is downloaded from a third-party server and executed on the local machine.

Another type of infected file is the malicious software installer bundle. The hackers bundle the virus in legitimate and well-known software that are commonly downloaded from the Internet. They modified files are uploaded to hacked or hacker-controlled download sites. P2P networks like BitTorrent are another popular source.

The criminals can also deliver the payloads via malicious browser addons. They are also known as browser hijackers and attempt to harvest sensitive information such as any stored history, bookmarks, cache data, passwords and settings. It also changes the default home page, search engine and new tabs page to a hacker-specified address. It may either be a virus download gateway or another criminal site that may deliver other threats as well.

Infection Flow of Resurrection File Virus

The Resurrection virus has been identified by security researchers. According to the available data this is a new strain of the Hidden Tear malware family, an open-source project that has produced numerous viruses ever since its first inception. It follows the usual patterns that are attributed to Hidden Tear. At the moment it is rated as a simple threat as it does not contain any modules other than the encryption engine.

When the victims get infected with the Resurrection virus the payload automatically starts to encrypt the user and system data according to a predefined list. The hackers can freely adjust the target file type extensions based on the victims. In the majority of cases the criminals attempt use generic ones that include the most popular types of files: videos, photos, music, documents, archives, databases, backups and etc.

When this process is complete the Resurrection virus crafts a ransom note in a Readme.html file. It contains the hacker-provided instructions in a color-formatted text. The message reads the following:

Hi, this is not your luck day because this is not a joke, all your files has been encrypted with Resurrection-Ransomware
If you want to retrieve all of your files I recommend you follow my simple instructions because you have no way out

The operators of the Resurrection virus request that the victims of the threat send them the sum of 1.77 Bitcoins. They have specified an example conversion rate of 3918 US Dollars or 3500 Euros and have provided the relevant address. All transactions carried out through the digital currency are anonymous and cannot be effectively traced. The people behind the ransomware can also quickly withdraw the received amounts and stop providing help to the compromised users. This is the reason why we recommend that everyone use a quality anti-spyware solution to remove the malware. In our removal instructions we also explain how to restore the compromised files with a professional-grade data recovery product. The interesting thing about the Resurrection virus is that it plays parts of the Harry Potter movie soundtrack while the ransomware note is opened.

During the infection process the built-in code assigns an unique ID to each compromised host. It is calculated by taking information gathered from the machines. Like other Hidden Tear strains the Resurrection virus may gather sensitive hardware and software data that is used in the calculation. The ransomware extension that is used to rename the victim files is ..resurrection.

As the Hidden Tear family is made up of modular blocks we expect that the hackers behind the malware may create updated versions of it if the first campaigns are deemed succesful.

Remove Resurrection File Virus and Restore Data

Please note that paying the requested ransom fee to cyber criminals does not really solve your problem with Resurrection virus. In fact, you only encourage hackers to continue spreading ransomware this way. Instead, you must remove Resurrection virus immediately, and only then look for ways to recover your data with a data recovery tool.

WARNING! Manual removal of Resurrection file virus requires being familiar with system files and registries. Removing important data accidentally can lead to permanent system damage.
